How do I prepare my Quant section for CAT?
Know the syllabus first and start doing mocks for each topic. You will know your accuracy and attempts in each topic and can then strategize your way. Then practice your way through all the topics in quant section. After this, the next step is to give timed mocks. CAT is an exam which tests your aptitude and problem solving more than your knowledge. Practice by giving timed mock exams and then work on speed solving.

I have an online certification in Python and R. Do I need to make any projects to increase my chances of selection? If yes, then what projects should I do?
Anything you do towards data science will give you an edge towards a job in data science. Just like there are no specific or standard courses for learning data science, there are no specific projects either. Start with any project which makes you enthusiastic about it.

What is the life before and after MBA?
After MBA you become a more business oriented person. Pursuing MBA from a good institute also exposes you to great opportunities and may open up your mindset or even influence your personality. Having invested another 2 years in postgraduation sometimes motivates individuals to go for more senior roles and packages than their peers. It is always possible for one without an MBA to outdo an MBA graduate in terms of both role and package.

I am a 2nd year Engineering student. I want to do MBA after my graduation. How do I start preparing for CAT?
Planning and practice! First know what skills you have and what you need to develop. You then know the path from there. Start practicing the parts you are good at and build solving skills in those you are not in. You can also jon good coaching institutes if that motivates you or join mock exams to assess your preparation level. Always try your skills in timed mocks and try to prepare a level higher than the one you are aiming at. Practice as much as you can and strategize your attempts.

I want to make a career in analytics, I belong to Non IT Branch. What should I do now? Shall I learn R? How to get internship and later job? Will my branch be an issue in getting job?
There are hardly any undergraduate level streams who specialize in analytics hence firms hiring undergraduates are seldom stream specific. You can contact alumni working at analytics roles for internships and know what tools and techniques they work on to have an edge in the interview. Internships in many firms is related to BI or reporting so you need to learn about these first. Learning R will be an advantage for a full time role and also for firms who give you modeling work early on.

I have done course on DataCamp for Data Science & Analytics. What are the other online courses I can do to gain expertise?
There are a variety of courses you can do. If you are only looking for gaining expertise through online courses, there are institutions such as analytixlabs, upgrad, simplilearn, udacity, coursera and the like. However, I think that doing online certification is not sufficient enough.

What is the difference between Business Analytics and Data Science? Which has more scope?
The names itself describe their orientation. While both are concerned with analytics, business analytics is more towards the business side of things and data science concerns itself with the technical data side of things. However, both sides are incomplete if they are purely business or purely technical. That is to say, a business analyst is also required to work on data and a data scientist is also required to discuss insights with management. In terms of scope, it should be equal since they both need to work together for delivering a project. Unless, you have knowledge of both business and have statistics and technical knowledge, you can only opt for one of them. In terms, of skills, data scientists require a larger skillset and are sometimes paid higher than their business analyst counterparts

Can we switch from analyst to development profile later? I am from CS.
The trend is somewhat opposite than the one you mentioned. That is to say, IT developers are moving towards analytics profiles. In my opinion, becoming an analyst is not a stepping stone towards becoming a developer as analytics is much more than mere development. The only common part is the one which works over data. Analytics is enveloped by business value generated from the entire exercise and making an impact besides just developing a piece of code.

I have good knowledge of R and Python. Do I need to study other languages or tools for a career in Data Sciences?
To start a career as a data scientist, none of these are a 'must'. However, having knowledge of tools and techniques in data science is good to have. Learn as much as you can before you start. Never stop learning because you will eventually reap the benefits of the things you learned early

What are the top companies hiring for B.Tech freshers for Analyst profile?
Analytics is a very rapidly changing field and growing very fast. Many firms are still setting up their analytics departments and are slowly adopting to the changing industry. The top companies will change depending upon which firms decide to move into analytics at a given time. As of today, firms such as IBM Labs and TCS Research Labs are among the top recruiters. You can also find top firms in analytics which include EDGE Networks, Social Cops, Bridge i2i, MU Sigma, Evalueserve, Fractal Analytics, exl, etc.

How is the course PGDBA offered by IIM C, ISI K and IIT Kh for freshers? How to apply and what are pre-requisites?
PGDBA has no experience requirement hence it is apt for freshers as well. Going by the past trend, the three institutes handle the admission process in rotation. This year, the admission notice should come out on IIM Calcutta website and will be headed by them. You can apply on the website and give the written test. If you are shortlisted, you will be called for an interview post which the final offers are rolled out. The eligibility and selection criteria section describes the syllabus for the written test and the minimum scores required for applying.

What are the courses we can do to gain expertise in Analytics and Data Science?
PGDBA should be your first choice since it gives you knowledge of both business and technical side of things. Most other courses only teach you one of them. Given, you want to make a career in analytics, you can also do MBA and enter into the industry as a business analyst. For the technical knowledge, there are a lot of courses such as Praxis, Aegis, Great lakes (for those with prior experience), IIITB, ISB Hyderabad, etc.

How vulnerable is the field to automation and thus job cuts given research in Machine Learning is constantly at an upward trajectory the world over?
I hold the opinion that automation is necessary for us to progress. Without automation, all of us working in the field of analytics will keep on wasting our time in repetitive and monotonous tasks of data collection, data processing and cleaning with simple models. With the aid of automation, these tasks need to be done a few times by for a particular type of project and more time can be devoted to getting a valuable outcome. Only through automation, we can progressively innovate and come up with better, faster and more efficient models. The same holds for other aspects of data science. There are some mundane tasks which are same for every project and can be automated. There are some other tasks which are specific to every problem and will always require manual intervention.

How was your experience of studying at 3 of the best institutes of India, IIM Calcutta, ISI Kolkata and IIT Kharagpur?
The experience of three of the oldest institutes in their domain was simply fabulous. You get access to alumni network of all the three institutes. You also witness the cultural differences between the three institutes while developing your own. You will interact with a variety of firms through the course and you and your batchmates will see each other getting awards and accolades during the course at an international level within the two years. You have the ability to gain business knowledge and make case studies as well as research papers out of the projects you work on. Having the best of all the three really gives you an advantage and makes your demand high. Students also maintain a blog (pgdbablog.wordpress.com) which describes some of these experiences and projects they have worked on in the past.

Is is necessary to do Masters in order to get a decent career in Analytics?
There are firms such as MU Sigma, EXL and Evalueserve who hire for analytics at an undergraduate level. Some other firms which I know of include EDGE Networks, Fractal Analytics, GlobalLogic, Analytics Quotient, etc. which also hire undergraduates for analytics. Going for masters in analytics means you want to limit your domain in exchange for advanced roles in industry earlier than those who started as an undergraduate.

How do a person from a non-english background start working on english, whilst preparing for MBA, GRE and other such exams?
Engineers in general are stronger on mathematics part than english parts. This is the reason cutoffs for english sections are lower than mathematics section. First of all you need to prioritize what you are aiming for as preparation strategy for CAT(MBA) and GRE is different despite similar syllabus. Look at past papers and current syllabus and prepare teh subtopics one by one. For example, CAT now includes Passages, sentence completion sentence arrangement and fill in the blanks in english section. Start reading english newspapers and good articles (such as those from economic times) for good passage reading ability. Other topics also come from reading articles. Practice makes perfect! The more familiar you are with the topics, the easier it is to crack the exam.

What type of a resume is most appreciated in MBA interviews?
Your resume is a reflection of your personality. That does not mean you should highlight each and everything that you have done since your birth. It does mean you show highlight the good parts of your personality and omit those you don't feel attached to. Your resume also indicates the roles you want to go for. Another important point is to make sure your resume is not empty. Crisp, clear and content friendly resumes are best for MBA interviews.

How to manage time to prepare for other competitive exams along with our job?
I, for one, got into postgraduation in the first year of my job. Management is the key. Your job may keep you busy from 9 to 5(or whatever working hours you have) but you always have weekends, holidays and times you spend at home. If you still feel that you're losing time from your hands then you're probably ignoring your instincts and partying or indulging in unnecessary fun and frolic. I used to keep every saturday as study day and every sunday as party day and easily balanced my studies with parties and fun. Get rid of all things which serve as obstacles for you and plan your studies. It will then boil down to how religiously you follow your own plans. Don't forget to make your plans realistic and keep spare time for rest as well as backup time for unplanned events/cover up sessions.

How to choose between MBA and M.Tech?
The choice is simple. Look at your goals. Ideally, one's goals should be independent of whether you choose MBA or M.Tech. These postgraduation courses will only aid you reach your goals faster. M.Tech is a technical specialization so it gives one an ease in pursuing research, Ph.D, opt for teaching or go for highly technical roles. MBA is a business oriented degree. Choosing MBA teaches you business skills and helps you ascend your career towards managerial roles. It also eases one to choose the path towards one's own startup. You can pursue MBA to aid in assiting your family business, establishing your startup better or opting for managerial roles. Remember that you can reach all these goals without MBA or MTech. That's why postgraduation is not a must after engineering but they do help you reach your goals faster

Shall I gain some experience before going for MBA or being a fresher is fine?
It is really your choice entirely. If you look abroad, MS is considered only after you have some experience. In India, you can also go for executive MBA if you have enough experience and can crack the process. For me, I believe in starting things early.
